Access to education can cut global poverty in half.
According to UNESCO, if all children in low-income countries had just basic reading skills, an estimated 171 million people could escape extreme poverty. If all adults completed secondary education, we could cut the global poverty rate by more than half. So what is needed to make this happen?
Education is critical for breaking the cycle of poverty. It increases job opportunities for low-income families and helps break the intergenerational cycle of poverty. Educated parents are more likely to send their children to school and help them with homework, which in turn sets them up for success in the future.
Education increases access to employment opportunities and can help reduce the likelihood of children from low-income families being trapped in low-paying jobs.
